iCBT Program for Chronic Pain

Welcome to a free internet Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Program for chronic pain!

The iCBT Program

The Wilderman Medical Clinic Internet Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Program (iCBT) is an educational program consisting of 8 modules of online cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness. This program targets individuals of all ages suffering from chronic pain and co-morbid anxiety and/or depression. Anyone suffering from a chronic debilitation (such as stress, injury, or other health problems) will be able to benefit.

Each of the 8 modules follows a sequential order that builds upon concepts in previous modules. The modules consist of information to read and comprehend at your own pace, interactive activities, and end-of-module homework. It is essential that the homework activities are completed at the end of each module before moving on to the next one in order to be able to fully retain the knowledge presented in each module.

Chronic Pain in Everyday Life

Chronic pain is extremely debilitating, both physically and mentally. When physical pain is a problem in your life, more often than not, you begin to develop stress about the situation, leading to more pain and a severe impact on your mental well being – it is a vicious cycle. Often people in these situations turn to substances or distractions to cope with the present situation. There is a dire need for an easily accessible program that provides mental health support to chronic pain sufferers all over the world - this stands as the motive behind the creation of our iCBT program.

Benefits of iCBT

The main potential benefit of this program to pain patients is that the program can be accessed online at no cost. Psychosocial support is recommended to many, if not all, chronic pain patients. Many of these patients will not seek psychotherapy as the costs are too high, or due to lack of access. Having access to this program for free will be extremely helpful because not only are you able to receive CBT at no cost, you can complete the program at your own pace.

Why iCBT Works

Various research studies have shown the efficacy of iCBT. A review on various iCBT programs revealed that in 7 trials, between 43% and 86% of chronic pain patients had significant decreases in pain intensity. Results of this review demonstrated that online CBT is effective for individuals with fibromyalgia, back and neck pain, and mixed etiology chronic pain. A study conducted on a physician-directed 5-module iCBT program for pain showed positive results. The treatment group achieved significantly greater improvements than controls in levels of anxiety, depression, and average pain levels after completion of the program.

Learning Objectives of iCBT

The learning objectives for the iCBT program are as follows:

  1. Become aware of the basis of cognitive behavioral therapy, including negative thinking patterns, stress reduction, changing thought patterns, mindfulness, meditation, and healthy lifestyle habits.
  2. Implement the skills learned through various interactive activities and homework provided with each module.
  3. Once the 8 modules and accompanying homework are complete, use the tools necessary to apply relaxation, positive thinking, and meditation to daily practice, in order to help dampen anxious and depressive thoughts and feelings related to chronic pain.
